Wimbledon 2006 2nd Round Round-Up
At Centre Court, top seed Amelie Mauresmo defeated Australia’s Samantha Stosur in the second round of Wimbledon yesterday, 6-4, 6-2, continuing her impressive streak thus far in the tournament.
In Court 1, Venus Williams proved herself against fellow American Lisa Raymond winning, 6-7, 7-5, 6-2. Raymond put up an admirable fight against the grass court-dominating Williams, but it wasn’t enough to secure a victory.
Meanwhile, in Court 2, Maria Sharapova defeated USA’s Ashley Harkleroad with a smooth 6-2, 6-2 victory.
Also on Court 2, Daniela Hantuchova secured her pass onward by beating USA’s Jamea Jackson 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
Court 3 saw Russia’s Anastasia Myskina defeating Germany’s Martina Muller 6-2, 6-1, and Italian Flavia Pennetta defeating American Laura Granville 6-2, 6-1.
In Court 5, Jelena Jankovic beat out Vania King 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
On Court 14, world’s number 8, Patty Schnyder suffered an unexpected loss against France’s Severine Bremond 6-4, 1-6, 4-6.
But France’s Tatiana Golivin couldn’t hold her own against Australia’s Nicole Pratt, and the Australian won 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
On Court 18, Russian Elena Dementieva defeated American Meghann Shaughnessy 7-5, 3-6, 5-7.
