Two Sonics, Storm fans sue ownership group

by Joe on October 2nd, 2007

As reported by the Seattle Times and the Tacoma News Tribune, two season-ticket holders for the Seattle Sonics and Storm plan to sue the teams and their ownership group for breach of contract, unfair business practices, etc.

The plaintiffs, Carolyn Bechtel and Patrick Shehee, charge that they would not have purchased a ticket package that included season tickets for future seasons in Seattle if they had known the team planned to leave.

There’s no way this is good for Clay Bennett and The Professional Basketball Club. Season-ticket sales have to be up for the Sonics with the drafting of Kevin Durant, but how many people aren’t buying because of the possible move to Oklahoma City? What do you think? Are you a Sonics or Storm fan? Do you have season tickets to one or both franchises?

According to the stories above, the Sonics are offering incentives to people who purchase tickets now, which is part of the lawsuit. People who purchase Sonics season tickets (I can’t find any mention of it on the Storm’s Web site) are guaranteed the same prices for upcoming seasons.

“They feel like if they would have known and it would have been fully disclosed that they were going to try and move the team that they wouldn’t have purchased the tickets based on the deal that had been offered,” said Tom Baich, an associate attorney with the law firm Myers & Company working on the case.

The deadline imposed by ownership for a new arena deal is scheduled for October 31.
