The Sky dynamic
There’s a great article from the Chicago Tribune about the Chicago Sky and how they’ve managed to support each other as women and teammates.
Off-setting that competitiveness, however, is a shared goal. Price, at the tender age of 22, understands the responsibility of playing in a women’s league that must be constantly promoted by its players if it is to survive. It is an objective that promotes camaraderie and is, in a sense, uniquely feminine.
It goes on to talk about how players need to forgo their personal egos for the sake of the league. As a growing league — and quite honestly — the shining example of women’s professional leagues based in America, the WNBA will have to make some personal sacrifices to continue attracting a larger market.
Wyckoff stressed that it’s not about treating women any gentler. “There are certainly plenty of coaches who scream–men and women,” she says. “It’s not about screaming but how things come across, how you talk to us. Certain things, especially coming from a man, don’t roll off your back so easily.”
Kudos to the Sky (and I would imagine most, if not all, of the other WNBA teams are similar in this regard).
