Sylvia Fowles dunks; still a big deal?
LSU senior Sylvia Fowles stole the ball just past half-court, streaked down and didn’t stop for a defender as she became the sixth player in NCAA Women’s Basketball history to dunk the ball during a game.

LSU has posted video of the dunk.
To read Fowles’ statements about it speak volumes about the reactions.
“When I saw that I had the steal, I saw someone coming up behind me and I knew I had to get my feet right then. I stutter stepped went up and it just happened.”
“It felt good to hear the crowd go wild, but it felt especially good to hear my teammates. I know (my teammates) have been waiting for this for a long time. I saw Seimone (Augustus) and Temeka (Johnson) earlier in the stands and it’s also something I owed them. I promised them that. Just to please them and my teammates makes me happy.”
Plus, she says we can expect more from her now that she has the first one behind her.
But one thing kinda bothers me.
Now don’t get me wrong, it’s still damn cool that she got up and threw it down — especially since it wasn’t a cheap one, either, but is it really still big enough to break out the history books? Do reactions like this affect the way the sport is seen?
ESPN called it “A Rise To Rarefied Air.
At what point will this not be news and be expected of these women? Ten? Thirteen? Thirty?
What do you think? Is this still as newsworthy as it’s coming out? Comment and let me know.

Thank you to LSU sports for all the entertainment and the chance that it gives me to spend time with my children. I have two children. Both girls now in their mid twenties. My oldest daughter and I have season tickets to the LSU womens basketball games and she loves LSU baseball and football. My youngest daughter was a powerlifter for LSU one season and she also attends the games with me. When we don’t go to the games we watch if they are on TV. Again thank you LSU sports for the opportunity to do things with my children
