Swin Cash expected to be traded

by Joe on February 17th, 2008

I hope you got to watch the Shooting Stars competition, because it might have been the last time you see Swin Cash in Detroit Shock swag.

A report from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer (based off a report in the Detroit Free Press) states Cash expects to be traded to the Seattle Storm when free agency begins on Tuesday.

From the Freep:

As soon as Tuesday, when WNBA free agency opens, Cash likely will be traded to the Seattle Storm for draft picks.

The trade will end her six-year career in Detroit, where she won two WNBA championships and was recognized as the face of the franchise.

“It’s a strong possibility,” Cash said of the trade. “Detroit’s my home. Regardless if I’m here or I end up somewhere else, I’ll always have a connection to Detroit. I’m just not going to disappear off the planet.”

Cash said she’s not sure how to prepare herself for a trade, but she already has taken a few steps in that direction. She has put her Rochester Hills house up for sale but still plans to purchase a home in downtown Detroit. As for playing in tonight’s event with Laimbeer, who will be trying to trade her in the coming days, Cash said: “It’s pretty much irony, but it is what it is.”

If the trade goes down as expected, then the Storm essentially net Cash (along with Roneeka Hodges) for Iziane Castro Marques when you take into account the expansion draft-day deal made with the Atlanta Dream. That’s not a bad haul for Brian Alger’s new squad. It’s also going to allow Seattle to focus on building a solid rotation through free agency as the bulk of their expected starters are strong veterans.
