Serena Williams Returns for the Win

by Ingrid Diaz on July 20th, 2006

After six months, tennis powerhouse Serena Williams hit the courts against Anastasia Myskina and defeated her 6-2, 6-2. No sweat for the Williams’ sister, who successfully impressed fans and doubters alike.

Despite the win, Williams remains level-headed, stating, “I didn’t play any better than I expected. I definitely expected to keep improving, making leaps and bounds, to play better tennis. … I think there’s definitely some rust there still.

“I’m not trying to be cocky or conceited. I expect that all the time. Whether I win or not, there’s always ways you can improve.”

At no. 139, she’s got a long way to go to reclaim that #1 spot - and she’s got a lot of tough competition along the way. But, the world of women’s tennis is a ever-revolving door where anything is possible.

No doubt Serena Williams - injuries allowing - will be focused on the top.
