Quaterfinals at Zurich Open
Well, the results are all in for the matches, and the following ladies are moving on to the quaterfinals. We already knew about some of them, but let’s recap all the same so we have the full picture.
Mauresmo will be facing Hantuchova in the quaterfinals after defeating Stosur 7-6 (4), 6-3. Hantuchova, for her part, downed Sugiyama 7-6 (6), 6-2, earning herself a match against the world’s #1.
Kuznetsova defeated Jankovic 7-6 (6), 7-5, winning herself a match against Hingis - who beat out Dechy with a smooth 6-3, 6-3.
Kirilenko got an easy victory against Golovin, 2-4 ret. sliding through to meet with Srebotnik. Srebotnik, btw, defeated Dementieva 6-1, 6-4, which is rather impressive in my book. What happened, Dementieva?
And finally, we’ve got Sharapova facing off Bacsinszky. Sharapova and Peer battled it out, but Sharapova managed to close out the match with two sets, 6-4, 7-6 (4). Bacsinszky also slid through against Schiavone 6-1 ret. Schiavone retired due to issues with her upper thigh muscles.
I’m sure Switzerland is rejoicing at having two of their ladies in the quarter-finals. It’s the first time in four years since that’s happened, so congratulations to the country and to the two ladies (Hingis and Bacsinszky) still in the running.
Let’s see if either of them make it to the semi-finals. With Mauresmo, Sharapova, and even Kuznetsova still running loose in the draw, it’s hard to pin down who’ll make it to the finals. Though, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the top seeds (Mauresmo and Sharapova) facing off at the end.
