Petrova Wins Bausch & Lomb Final
The 23 year old Russian tennis player went on to defeat Francesca Schiavone at the Bausch & Lomb finals. The final score was 6-4, 6-4, and marked the first time in five matches that the Russian player defeats Schiavone.
“Every year, I’ve been doing better and better, playing more consistent and winning more matches,” said Petrova, ranked seventh on the WTA Tour. “Hopefully, I’ll get more and more titles this year.”
She made the latest one look easy. Then again, winning became an integral part of her daily routine at the first clay-court event of the season.
She went for a 10-minute run along the beach, then took a dip in the Atlantic Ocean before each match. It wasn’t quite as pleasant Sunday after a cold front passed through, but Petrova reluctantly stayed with her schedule.
“I really rushed back to the room and had a hot shower and a cup of tea,” she said. “It’s hard to swim in that cold water. You just get in, stay there a couple of minutes and run out as quick as you can.”
Petrova was much more patient in the championship match, content with long rallies on the cushy, green clay and waiting for Schiavone to make mistakes.
Schiavone did. The 25-year-old Italian finished with 25 unforced errors and five double faults.
“I felt like she couldn’t make huge winners against me on this surface,” Petrova said, adding that she was too aggressive against Schiavone in their four previous meetings.
