Navratilova Asks for Ban on Grunting

by Ingrid Diaz on July 13th, 2006

It’s “too much”, said Elena Dementieva in reference to Maria Sharapova’s grunting, and Martina Navratilova agrees: They should outlaw it. It’s really unfair to the opponent and it’s terrible for the public.”

She explained: “At the net, you need to hear the ball hit the racket so that you know how fast it’s travelling,” she said.

“You first hear the ball, then you react to the sound and then the flight of the ball.

“When you’re at the baseline, you’re OK, but when you’re at the net and you don’t hear the ball being hit it becomes dangerous because you don’t know how fast the ball’s coming at you.

“You should try and play tennis with headphones on and not hear the ball hitting the ground or hitting your opponent’s racket to know what I’m talking about.”

I have to say, I think the grunting is really irritating, but should it be banned?

What do you think?

1 opinion for Navratilova Asks for Ban on Grunting

I agree with the critics of grunting. If it wasn’t necessary before in all the years of women’s tennis, why is it suddenly imperative to a person’s game? To me it is both a calculated distraction and a lack of disclipline. Sure it’s easy to grunt or make noise during an exhalation, but do you really have to?
