Mauresmo Wins 12th Straight Match at Antwerp

by Ingrid Diaz on February 17th, 2006

Amelie Mauresmo is on fire! In yesterday’s match she went on to win her 12th consecutive match at the WTA stop in Antwerp when she defeated Czech player Iveta Benesova 6-3, 6-3. That means it’s now off to the quarterfinals for Mauresmo.

Two more matches and she’ll be facing current #1 Kim Clijsters, and oh, what an awesome match that would be. Provided no one gets an inflamed stomach.

“That court is a somewhat faster than the one in Paris and it also feels slightly different than last year’s, but not necessarily worse for my game,” Mauresmo said. “I have missed out on some easy balls today, but at the important moments I was where I ought to be and I am convinced things can only get better.”

Also into the quarters were (5) Elena Dementieva (d. Domachowska), (6) Patty Schnyder (d. Peschke by injury walkover), and Ukraining qualifier Olga Savchuk who stunned (9) Daniela Hantuchova in straights.

Lining up for the Friday quarterfinals are Savchuk vs. Petrova, Schnyder vs. Mauresmo, Clijsters vs. Safina, and Daniilidou vs. Dementieva.

“I like playing against her,” said Mauresmo of Schnyder. “Somehow, I manage reading her game quite well: her sudden changes in rhythm, the turns she makes and her left-handed service. Last year I beat her in Antwerp in the quarterfinals and this year in Australian Open as well. So I hope I can maintain my fortune.”
