Mauresmo Beats Pierce in Gaz de France
Amelie Mauresmo has won her second tournament in a row after beating fellow French player Mary Pierce at the Gaz de France 6-1, 7-6 (2). I bet Mauresmo is feeling pretty good these days. Not bad!
I wish I’d caught the match. It’s the second Mauresmo/Pierce match I miss and it’s getting old. I love Mary Pierce. I think the doubles match she played with Mauresmo at last year’s French Open was one of the best games I’ve ever seen. So what if they lost? They looked like they were having a blast and that’s all that matters. Well, to me anyway. I’m sure they weren’t happy that they lost to Russia.

The top-seeded Mauresmo, ranked No. 2, was coming off a victory at the year’s first major two weeks ago. She also beat Pierce in the final of the WTA Tour Championships in November.Mauresmo overcome poor play early on to extend her winning streak to 11 matches. She leads Pierce 6-4 in head-to-head matches.”Somehow, I won the right to make errors,” Mauresmo said. “It’s an extraordinary luxury. I now have more lucidity about opportunities and key moments.”
At 2-1 in the tiebreak, Pierce felt pain in her right leg.
“After that point, I couldn’t run anymore,” she said.
She said the injury is an inflamed tendon, hampering her service returns. Pierce will see her doctor Monday to determine if she can play this week in Antwerp, Belgium.
“The pain started two days before the start of the Australian Open. I took some anti-inflammatory medicine,” she said. “But I felt the pain again just before this tournament.”
People are going to start to think that playing against Mauresmo is an automatic health risk!Well, regardless: Congratulations once again to Amelie Mauresmo!

Gah!! I’m SO disappointed that the french TV didn’t air this match!! Even to see Pierce lose again. I’m not so fond of that trend lately to miss all the good matches. Waiting until the French Open is going to suck. But yay Mauresmo for prompting France Televisions to broadcast more women’s tennis.
