Martina Hingis Finds Happiness on the Tennis Court

by Ingrid Diaz on March 9th, 2006

It was almost four years since Martina Hingis retired from the court, but now she’s back to doing what she loves to do, and she’s all the happier for it.

“My life was not as fulfilled without tennis,” she said. “There wasn’t that much time left to do it but I’m excited again.

“You have your ups and downs, you have a curve you’re trying to balance. The balancing end of it is the challenge to be out there in front of the people, the fans like at the Australian Open in front of the 15,000 crowd and winning. Those are the moments we cherish. I didn’t have it for three years and didn’t know if I ever would have it again.”

Due to physical problems involving her foot, Hingis was forced to retire back in 2002, but after giving tennis another shot in her off-time, she decided perhaps it was time to return full-time. And so she’s back. And we’re all happy to see her out on the court again. Well, maybe not all of us. But some of us are happy she’s back. Justine Henin-Hardenne, for example.

“I think it’s great for the tour to have Martina back,” said Justine Henin-Hardenne the top seed at the $2.1 million Pacific Life Open. “She’s playing at a very good level right now.

“She’s played very consistent since the beginning of the year. She went to another level, and against the top players, I’m sure, it will take a little bit more time until she can get used to the rhythms we have to play now. But she proved she can be a very good player already. It’s very interesting and exciting to see where she is at the end of the season.”

Even Lindsey Davenport is impressed.

“It’s amazing she is able to do the same thing in the ’90s and again today against players who supposedly hit harder and would maybe overpower her,” said Davenport, who is a former world No. 1. “I think she’s doing things now at a higher level, taking balls early, still changing directions on the ball; still putting her opponents on the run, and she just started.

“I think it’s a great comeback story, and the fans are kind of loving to see how her game has changed and how she’s adapting to it.”
