Liveblogging the WNBA Draft
Unless Candace Parker’s arm falls off between now and the next few minutes, she’ll be the No. 1 pick by the Los Angeles Sparks.
I don’t think you can hold any of LA’s stats last season against them as depleted as their roster was.
12:05 p.m. - I don’t think LA can really waste any time unless somebody wants to give them two or three stars plus a high draft pick to move up.
12:07 - They only have two minutes?
12:09 - No. 1, Los Angeles Sparks - Candace Parker. This immediately makes the Sparks the odds-on favorites for the WNBA title.
12:12 - I gotta say, that didn’t sound too comforting about explaining the shoulder injury. I wouldn’t put to much thought into it, but it sounds like it might linger between now and training camp.
12:14 - No. 2, Chicago Sky, Sylvia Fowles. Nice hat… the Sky get a great pick, and such a strong player underneath. Any other draft and they might not get a superstar at No. 2.
12:16 - No. 3, Minnesota Lynx, Candice Wiggins. No time-wasting there. One of the best players in the NCAA falls to you at 3, you grab her. She’s quick, she’s a deadly shooter and she commands the floor. The Lynx have a couple of shooters now and will at least improve, but we’ll find out if there’s actual value in multiple picks and WNBA-ready players.
12:19 - Scoring’s important in basketball? Really?
12:19 - No. 4, Detroit Shock, Alexis Hornbuckle. The Shock needed a scorer and defender after trading Swin Cash.
12:23 - I don’t have ESPNU. WTF?
12:24 - No. 5, Houston Comets, Matee Ajavon. A Rutgers player with defensive abilities will be a great addition to any team.
12:26 - There’s a live chat going on at WNBA.com. ESPN.com.
12:28 - No. 6, Washington Mystics, Crystal Langhorne. I’ve followed her career for awhile because I knew her brother at Texas State. Washington gets a “hometown” girl who can score, rebound and play defense. Good pick here.
12:31 - No. 7, New York Liberty, Essence Carson. A guard/forward who can score, play defense and spread the floor.
12:38 - No. 8, Atlanta Dream, Tamara Young. I don’t know much except she’s apparently a scoring guard that can rebound, from the WNBA analysts. That’s a big team Atlanta has right now, so guards work.
12:40 - No. 9, Connecticut Sun, Amber Holt. Sun addressing a scoring guard need here. Best scorer in the country at 27 PPG and 52 percent shooting.
12:43 - No. 10, Sacramento Monarchs, Laura Harper.
12:43 - Erlana Larkins, anybody?
12:47 - No. 11, Detroit Shock, Tasha Humphrey. A big shooter who can hit the open woman on the perimeter. It’ll open the floor and keep the Shock in the top spot for the East title.
12:50 - No. 12, Connecticut Sun, Ketia Swanier. They do know you can draft outside the state, right?
12:53 - No. 13, Phoenix Mercury, LaToya Pringle. I still think LA is the top team in the West, but that’s not a disrespectful jab at the champs. The West is stacked.
12:55 - No. 14, New York Liberty, Erlana Larkins. Finally. A player of this caliber falling to 14 is a great turn of events for the Liberty.
12:57 - Gotta head to work. Enjoy. More reax later.
1:00 - All New Dazzling Dunks & Basketball Bloopers? Really? I owned this on VHS, that’s how old this is. Really, ESPN? Come on, seriously?
1:05 - Is Frank Layden still alive?
