Life as a WNBA journeywoman

Kristen Rasmussen and Lauren Jackson

Minnesota Lynx forward Kristen Rasmussen returned Friday to Connecticut for the first time since being traded in the offseason, but as seems to be the standard, holds no ill will toward the Sun’s choice to go in a different direction. From the Norwich Bulletin:

The initial plan, though, had her pegged to be that for Connecticut for at least a while. In brining her on as a free agent last winter, Connecticut inked her to three-year deal, prompting Rasmussen and Tarr to buy a house in the area. But as the Sun underwent an offseason overhaul this winter, they sought a forward who provided a little more of an inside presence and one, they hoped, could bring another vocal presence in the locker room.

By mid-March, they had her in Tamika Raymond — just at the expense of Rasmussen, who got the news of the trade via a phone call from Sun coach Mike Thibault.

“Yeah, I was (surprised),” Rasmussen said. “We were in the middle of the season in Spain, and he just called up. You can’t really say, ‘Why do you want to trade me? I don’t understand.’ But he was just saying, ‘It might be a better situation for you and we’re going to try to change things around here.’

“I respect that, and I respect my new coach (Don Zierden) for wanting me as badly as they did,” she continued. “You have to have that outlook that everything’s going to be OK and sometimes things happen for a better reason.”

Rasmussen has played for eight teams in nine WNBA seasons, but such is the life of a role-player.  She scored five points in 20 minutes off the bench as the Lynx were handed their first loss of the season in an exciting last-second finish against the Sun.
