Kim Clijsters Might Skip Fed Cup Semis

by Ingrid Diaz on May 2nd, 2006

Kim Clijsters announced in her website that she might skip the Fed Cup if they opt for a clay court. The tennis player is concerned about playing on clay so soon after playing on grass at Wimbledon. The timing is unfortunate, as Belgium would be the favored team were the clay court chosen. Belgium will be facing the U.S. on July 15-16th.

From Kim Clijsters’ online journal:

I experienced a truly magnificient Fed Cup week. In the first place because of its result, eliminating the Russian team is not easy. But also because of the atmosphere, the fun with Justine, Kirsten, Caroline and the others. Many thanks as well for your enthusiasm and support in Liege. Thanks as well to the people from the web forum, their flags high up in the audience were pretty visible.

I would love to be part of the team when we will play against the US, even though the date is a bit of a problem as it is right after Wimbledon and before Stanford. However, should we be playing on hard court, that Fed Cup tie would be an easy transition and a great preparation for the hard court summer.

Fellow Belgian player, Justine Henin-Hardenne has yet to commit to the Fed Cup semifinals. For Belgium’s sake I really hope both players make it, as it will make it a far more interesting tournament.
