Hingis and Sharapova Advance to Semi-Finals at Indian Wells
So far so good for Martina Hingis and Maria Sharapova.
Hingis disposed of 19-year-old Dinara Safina 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals to move within two victories of her second Pacific Life Open title (1998) and 41st overall.
“Coming back on court today after beating Lindsay, it’s just not easy - mentally and physically,” Hingis said. “Thank God, if I had to probably face Justine Henin (Hardenne) or someone else, it would be a different story. But Safina still needs to learn a few things.”
Maria Sharapova said this time she was not going to underestimate Anna-Lena Groenefeld like the last time they played in Moscow.
Sharapova rolled to a 6-1, 6-3 victory, making short work of the rising German player.
In Moscow late during last season, Groenefeld sprained her ankle and retired after leading Sharapova 6-1, 4-2.
“I try to forget the last time I played her,” Sharapova said. “I tried to forget the whole experience. It wasn’t a great day for me. Neither was it for her. It didn’t end on a good note.
“From the beginning of the match, I didn’t underestimate her serve or her big game. So I think I came out ready, ready for the challenge. You know, it turned out well.”
Next up, Sharapova and Hingis will be facing each other for a chance at the finals.
