Early trouble for the Phoenix Mercury?
While I don’t think it’s time to panic just yet (they haven’t even been together for a week), any string of losses is worrisome in the stacked West. While Cappie Pondexter and Diana Taurasi combined for 43 points in the Phoenix Mercury’s 81-76 loss to the San Antonio Silver Stars, they only shot 15 of 39 (38 percent). From the Arizona Republic:
There was the rebounding; San Antonio grabbed 11 more than Phoenix. There were the 18 Mercury turnovers and the 17 points the Silver Stars scored off them. And there was that second quarter, when the Mercury shot 2 for 15 from the field and watched an eight-point lead turn into an 11-point deficit.
But most of the mumbling done in the Mercury locker room after losing for the second time in as many games came from three players in uniform who were on the last Mercury team to start the season with consecutive losses.
That was 2006, when Phoenix started 0-4 and missed the playoffs.
“We actually just talked about that,” said Diana Taurasi, who scored 20 points Tuesday, second among Mercury players to Cappie Pondexter’s 23. “It’s hard to go 0-4 and get out of that hole, especially in the West.”
It doesn’t get easy for the Merc as they have to face the Seattle Storm on Thursday.
