Coolest logo, shortest tournament
As I mentioned below, Australia already has their ticket punched for Beijing based on their win at the Worlds, but practice can’t hurt in this three-team, four-game tournament.
Joining the Opals in Dunedin will be host New Zealand and Fiji, which are both guaranteed spots in the next big international competition. The winner of this tournament will go to the Olympics while the other will go to the play-in tournament.
I doubt the Opals will suit up their best players as Lauren Jackson is still feeling the effects from a foot injury suffered during the WNBA season and Penny Taylor didn’t suit up in the final warm-up game against the US. We should get to see the future of Australia basketball in this tournament as they’re getting a lot of prep work from the rest of the team.
