During the finals in Antwerp, Kim Clijsters lost to Mauresmo 6-3, 3-6, 3-6, and in the process managed to reaggravate her right ankle, which she initially injured during the Australia Open. As a result, the player is opting to take three weeks to recover (a very smart move), forcing her to withdraw from the Indian Wells tournament.

The reigning U.S. Open initially tore ligaments in her ankle during the Australian Open semifinal against Mauresmo and was forced to retire from that match. Clijsters said she hopes to return to tournament tennis in time to defend her Nasdaq-100 Open title at Key Biscayne. The Tier I Nasdaq-100 Open begins on March 22nd at the Crandon Park Tennis Center.

“In close consultation with the medical team, I decided to have period of rest for the next three weeks, which is really necessary to get rid of all the tiny physical problems,” Clijsters said. “I don’t want to go over the issue again and again, I just want to be injury free. So no tennis for a while, but even a more intensive treatment and physiotherapy. I also cancelled my participation of the Indian Wells tournament even though I had to defend a title and a lot of points there. My body has priority. After all that rest and care, I hope to be able to train seriously for a week and then play the Miami tournament.”

Best of luck to Kim Clijsters in the recovery process. She does have a number one spot to maintain! Especially with Amelie Mauresmo at her heels.
