Clijsters Remains at #2 and mores scores from the Italian Open
It’s kind of funny to watch Clijsters and Mauresmo yo-yo back and forth between first and second ranks. If Clijsters had won her match against Safina at the Italian Open, she would’ve sailed past Mauresmo and reclaimed her throne at the top. Alas, she fell short, losing 6-4, 7-6 (2).
Mauresmo, therefore, is safe at number one for now. She withdrew from the Italian Open due to illness, along with Petrova and Sharapova, which just left Dementieva as the top seed at number 5.
Dementieva went on to beat out Groenfeld 7-6 (1), 3-6, 6-1.
Venus Williams beat Shnyder 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-1.
Hingis defeated Schiavone 6-0, 7-5.
Kuznetsova beat Myskina 6-1, 6-4.
And so, they’re all advancing to the quarterfinals.
