Aw, geez, not this s*** again!
Ya know, you go and give reporters some kudos and a columnist comes and whacks it all up.
Jim Moore of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer wrote a column today about our old pal Dennis Rodman coaching the Seattle Storm. Now, I don’t know Moore well enough to know if this was strictly satirical (I’m really, really hoping it was and I just missed it) or if he meant it, but to even give Rodman some run is exactly what he sought.
NEWS ITEM LAST MONTH: Dennis Rodman says he wants to coach a WNBA team. News item last week: Anne Donovan resigns as Seattle Storm coach.
Naturally, the next news item I’d like to see is this: Storm hires Rodman as coach.
Talk about something really ridiculous making perfect sense. Rodman would attract new fans to KeyArena with his novelty act and convert them into full-time followers after they see his scrappy team.
He goes on to write that Bill Laimbeer didn’t have any trouble coaching the Detroit Shock and maybe Rodman could do the same for the Storm. He also wrote it’d be a hell of a way to sell tickets to a team planning its departure.
Ugh.
Tell me this guy would not appeal to a wider audience.
He won’t, Jim.
He’d be an absolute spectacle which whom none of his team would respond to.
Luckily, this was the response from the Storm’s brass.
Having failed in last week’s bid to get Rick Neuheisel hired at WSU, I called Storm GM Karen Bryant to pitch Rodman and received this bad news through team spokesman Tom Savage:
“He has not contacted us, and we have not contacted him, nor do we have plans to contact him. A list of candidates is being assembled and he’s not one of them.”
If I’m missing the joke, cool, you got me, Jim. But if there’s even a hint of seriousness in there, you’ve helped achieve Dennis’ plan all along, and the joke’s on you, Jim.
