Americans defeat Jamaica in first half, keep playing anyway

Team USA scored enough points to defeat Jamaica with a 48-point showing in the first half, but rules are rules and they played the whole game out - a game the Americans won 115-47.

The Americans shot 60 percent from the field and had five players in double figures.

I didn’t watch this game, and even if I could have, I might have turned it off and enforced my own mercy rule. Seimone Augustus led Team USA with 19 points on 8 of 8 shooting and Cappie Pondexter dished nine assists to go with her six points.

Luckily, Team USA was able to use this game to hone some of their skills for the next rounds. Everyone of the 12 team members played at least 10 minutes against Jamaica.

“We knew we were going to come in after the starters played their 10 minutes in the third quarter and we didn’t want to have any kind of drop off,” said Augustus, who scored 15 of her 19 points the fourth quarter. “We switched over to a two-three zone, something that coach said we needed to work on. I think we did an excellent job at executing that. On the flip side, I think we did an awesome job of getting our transition going, getting a lot of running opportunities off of our defensive deflections and things like that.”

Just a note here, it’d be nice if we could find the official box scores and have them correct. FIBA has one box score while USA Basketball has a PDF of the official box. I’m going with USAB for the time being until FIBA gets things straightened out. (Just as a favor to you, I don’t like when people link to PDF files, so I won’t do that to you. If I must, it will be duly noted before you click).
