Amelie Mauresmo Pulls Out of Rogers Cup

by Ingrid Diaz on August 10th, 2006

Next week’s Rogers Cup will be missing World Number 1, Amelie Mauresmo. The French player has pulled out of the tournament due to a shoulder injury.

“I am very disappointed to have to withdraw from the Rogers Cup because of a right shoulder strain that I sustained, while preparing for the tournament,” Mauresmo said in a statement on Wednesday. “Some of the best moments of my career have been at the Rogers Cup in Montreal, where the fans, tournament organizers, media and sponsors have always been so great to me.”

Venus Williams and Elena Bovina have also pulled out of the Cup. Williams due to a wrist injury she suffered at Wimbledon, and Bovina is still not well enough to play despite hopes to the contrary.

The good news is that Clijsters, Sharapova, Henin-Hardenne, Hingis, and Pierce will all be playing. Should be a good tournament.
