Amelie Mauresmo Back to Number 1

by Ingrid Diaz on March 22nd, 2006

It’s been about 17 months since French player Amelie Mauresmo held the number one spot in women’s tennis, but she’s back there again, pushing Kim Clijsters down to number two, with Justine Henin-Hardenne breathing down both of their backs.

Mauresmo ascends to the No.1 ranking for the second time in her career and for a sixth non-consecutive week, capping a stellar performance at the end of 2005 and the start of 2006. Having ended last season by winning the Advanta Championships in Philadelphia, PA, USA and the season-ending Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Championships in Los Angeles, CA, USA, the Frenchwoman has won a Tour-leading three tournaments already in 2006. After capturing her first Grand Slam singles title at the Australian Open, the 26-year-old followed with victories at the Open Gaz de France in Paris, France and the Proximus Diamond Games in Antwerp, Belgium. Mauresmo has won 19 of her 22 matches this season, including a 16-match winning streak beginning at the Australian Open and ending in Dubai.
