Opening Day thoughts

I’m going to use this thread for my thoughts on today’s game (which will likely be LA vs. PHX since I don’t have NBATV).
Many previews out there have the Sparks winning the title or at least the Western Conference, but what I don’t see many taking into account is as good as their biggest new […]

More from the WNBA GM survey

The WNBA posted their full survey of the league’s GMs, and what I find most interesting are the player breakdowns.
It doesn’t list the rules for voting, but I would think (and as it appears, it’s not a rule) you should restrict yourselves from voting for people from your own team.
By the way, the Phoenix Mercury […]

WNBA GMs pick Sparks to win title

In a survey of WNBA general managers, those surveyed picked the Los Angeles Sparks to win the WNBA title. Here’s the rundown, but I’m still working on my own previews, which is different from the pros.
1. Which team will win WNBA Finals 2008?
Los Angeles: 42%
Phoenix: 17%
Seattle: 17%
Also receiving votes: Connecticut, Indiana, San Antonio
Let’s just […]

My mom and Mark Lemke

As part of our channel-wide post this month, we’re all posting a favorite childhood memory involving sports. While I’ll try to keep it as short as possible, it’s going to be kind of hard, but here goes.
Back in 1991 was my first time really getting into baseball. Sure, I remember where I was when Kirk […]

WNBA hosts community events before season-openers

Came across this from the people over at SilverStarsNation. The WNBA is hosting community events this week as part of WNBA Cares Week before they officially tip-off.  Some of the highlights (I’m a sucker for parent-child stuff.)
Houston: The Comets will host a special Mothers and Daughters Shooting Clinic with the Monica Lamb […]

Would you like some fries with that WNBA season opener?

According to an article in Advertising Age, the WNBA will debut this season (next week, whee!) with a McDonald’s logo on all 14 team jerseys.
As part of a sponsorship of the WNBA’s season-opening week, the fast feeder’s logo will appear on the front of all 14 team jerseys during early-season contests, including three nationally televised […]

Dawn Staley is South Carolina’s woman now

Dawn Staley is expected to be introduced as the next head coach at the University of South Carolina this weekend, according to a report in The State. (Hat tip to She’s Got Game for the find).
Staley, highly recognized as one of the best women’s basketball players ever, was the winningest head coach in Temple’s history. […]

Comets hope Year Two brings changes

After a 13-21 finish with rushed first-year coach Karleen Thompson at the helm, a full off-season is expected to bring a full change to the Houston Comets. From the Houston Chronicle:
The team promoted Thompson, a former Comets assistant, to general manager and head coach on Feb. 14, 2007, and she went to work with a […]

WNBA offering 90 live webcasts for 2008 season

I’m ashamed to admit, but I didn’t know this. The WNBA is offering livestreams of some of its games — for free. A few weeks ago, I made a mention of the New York Liberty offering up some livestreams, too, so it’s very likely you can catch most of your team’s games online.
I’m a big […]
