WTA Championships Will Remain in Madrid

The Sony Ericsson WTA Tour has no plans to move its season-ending Championships from Madrid, Spain come the 2007 tennis season. In fact, come 2007, the WTA Championships will see a record-breaking prize of $62 million along with:

62-event schedule that features a new tournament in Barcelona and a series of events in rapid growth markets […]

WTA Championships Semifinals, Finals Results

Justine Henin-Hardenne took her revenge against Amelie Mauresmo in the WTA Championship finals, defeating the Frenchwoman in two straight sets 6-4, 6-3. This came after a win against Maria Sharapova in the semifinals, 6-2, 7-6 (5).
I guess the unstoppable Sharapova was stoppable after all.
I’m sure it was a nice victory for Henin-Hardenne who had to […]

WTA Championships: Match-Ups for November 10, 2006

Today should be very interesting for Henin-Hardenne and Mauresmo fans, as the two are facing off. Defeating Mauresmo has proven a bit difficult for Henin-Hardenne this year. First with having to withdraw in the finals of the Australian Open, and later being defeated by the French player at Wimbledon.
I don’t know, though, I have a […]

WTA Championships: Results for November 9, 2006

Yesterday’s matches didn’t yield many surprises - at least not for me.
In the Yellow Group, Amelie Mauresmo proved that she’s not given up yet by defeating Martina Hingis 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Also in the Yellow Group, Justine Henin-Hardenne also made sure everyone knows she’s planning to hang tight to that number 1 rank, and defeated Nadia […]

WTA Championships, November 9, 2006 Match-Ups

Here are today’s match-ups in Madrid:
Henin-Hardenne vs. Petrova
Mauresmo vs. Hingis
Kuznetsova vs. Clijsters
I’m pretty confident that Henin-Hardenne will defeat Petrova. I also think Mauresmo can beat Hingis if she focuses. Between Kuznetsova and Clijsters, not sure. I think Kuznetsova has been pretty strong so far, so I’d think she’d win this one. Although with Clijsters loss […]

WTA Championships: Where are the Americans?

Came across an article at Yahoo! Sports dealing with the notable absence of American players at this year’s WTA Championships. For the most part, I hadn’t really given the idea much thought. I tend to like players for the players themselves and not for the country they’re representing, though it’s painfully obvious that the U.S. […]

Challenge Bell Semi-Finals & Finals

Well, I was a little off with my predictions of the semi-finals. Turns out that the ones who made it through were actually:
Poutchkova (who defeated Jankovic 2-6, 6-4, 3-1 A)
Bremond (who defeated Sucha 6-1, 6-4)
Osterloh (who defeated Wozniak 6-3, 6-2)
And Bartoli (who defeated Perry 6-1, 6-0)
In the semi-finals, Bartoli defeated Osterloh 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, moving […]

Mauresmo Loses in Madrid

Ouch. That had to hurt. World number one, Amelie Mauresmo, played a horrible game against Nadia Petrova in the opening rounds of the WTA Championships in Madrid, Spain. The final score of that match was 6-2, 6-2, which is simply embarrassing for Mauresmo.

“There’s nothing to say about that match except it couldn’t get worse in […]
